Bawa la Tumaini

Bawa la Tumaini (“Wing of Hope”) is a Kenyan fair trade company working with marginalized handicraft producers, many of whom live in the large slums around Nairobi.

Bawa la Tumaini

Bawa la Tumaini seeks to share the enormous creativity of gifted producers living in low income areas and slums. Through its efforts, it seeks to prevent these talents from going to waste by sharing them with customers in global markets and to reward the producers with the dignity and hope that comes from having a steady job and a fair wage. The producers, especially women, lack the means to produce and sell products themselves and are often exploited by middlemen who deny them the fair treatment and working conditions thus essentially confining them to living in the slums. Through their work with Bawa la Tumaini these otherwise marginalized producers get what they deserve for their beautiful products. They do not require charity - just a fair opportunity to compete on the global stage. Bawa la Tumaini believes that a fairer world is possible and by the jobs that it creates bring tangible and lasting change and hope to both individuals and communities around Kenya.
Most of Bawa la Tumaini’s producer partners are women. With their attention to detail, commitment and hard work, women form the backbone of the company. Though often marginalized by mainstream business, women are the foundation of most African families, and their involvement enables Bawa la Tumaini to increase its impact on the wider community.

Trade as One currently buys soapstone and wooden items from Bawa la Tumaini - these are produced with sustainable local materials and examples of traditional African crafts. Bawa has also taken steps to address issues of safety and has improved the working conditions for the sourcing and crafting of the soapstone products.
